For Baňka, the photo is a snapshot not of a single moment, but of the essence of life, a “minuscule probe into time.” The photos presented in this exhibition demonstrate his awareness of the limits of the corporeal experience of time, and the fact that time continues beyond what humans can perceive. His fascination with the ephemeral is conveyed by his sensitivity to light and experimentation with multiple exposure. Baňka’s diverse body of work is delicately tied together by the thin thread of temporality. Such is evident both in his attention to expressions of the face and body in his images, as well as in the varied photographic techniques he uses to express himself. ![]() However, he has responded to state censorship less by embedding targeted political messages into his work, but by more broadly embracing the human capacity for expression in its totality. Born in Prague in 1941, Pavel Baňka lived through a period of fierce political oppression. ![]()

Martin Rev’s low-budget electronics are violent and hypnotic Alan Vega screams as a rhythmic device. These New York synth-punks evoke everything from the Velvet Underground to rockabilly. Khan glided through the head-nodding “Everlasting Love” and the twisty-turny “Better Days,” and fans appreciated the adjustment: Ask Rufus was the group’s first platinum record. But after spending 16 months in the studio working on Ask Rufus, they came out with a record that gave their songs more room to breathe, anticipating the lithe, loose arrangements of Nineties neo-soul. But for all its sad realism, Butler’s is music that still finds solace, and purpose, in communal celebration.įronted by Chaka Khan, one of soul music’s most combustible singers, Rufus built its mid-Seventies sound on heavy-footed, guitar-slathered funk. ![]() ![]() Built on family ties (leader Win Butler, his wife, Régine Chassagne, his brother Will), the Montreal band made symphonic rock that truly rocked, simultaneously outsize and deeply personal, like the best pop. The compound responsible for the flavor of chili peppers is called capsaicin, which has a similar structure to that of piperine. The chili pepper is believed to have originated in Mexico, and have been used for over 9,000 years. Chili peppers, unlike peppercorn, grow on many species of the Capsicum genus (peppercorn is a single species). When Columbus traveled to Haiti, he found the chili pepper and brought it back to Spain, even though it wasn't like the pepper he knew. It is not fully understood how this works, but it is believed that the structure of the piperine molecule allows it to attach to proteins on the end of pain nerves, causing the proteins to change shape and send signals to the brain. It is not a taste, but a response to the chemical stimulus by pain nerves. ![]() ![]() The hot sensation we experience when eating pepper is caused by piperine. ![]() ![]() ![]() Note to readers- if you haven’t read Fallen Too Far, there may be some storyline spoilers.Įventually, someone did save me.
